Practical information : Treat yourself (& others) Ghana
Timetable
Opening and closing hours are very flexible in Ghana. Some shops are open continuously (8:00-8:30 to 16:30-17:00), others close at lunch time (between 12:00-12:30 and 14:30-15:00).
Budget & Tips
You'll need to negotiate prices in all informal stores, such as street or beachside boutiques offering clothes, fashion accessories, handicrafts or souvenirs. Here's a tip: divide the advertised price by two, then gradually increase it until you reach an agreement with the shopkeeper. In more official stores, on the other hand, you should pay the advertised price.
Tip: for "sustainable" souvenir shopping, i.e. ensuring that the money you spend goes into a fair trade circuit, we recommend the Baobab Guesthouse boutique in Cape Coast. In addition to offering original items at fair prices, the NGO behind the store ensures that the money generated by these sales has been injected into projects for the professional integration of children who have dropped out of school. To a lesser extent, Global Mama's boutiques (Accra and Cape Coast) are also "fair trade" addresses, but prices are considerably higher.
What's very local
Whether in Accra or in the towns and villages along the coast and inland, Ghana has a wealth of handicrafts to offer, and you'll no doubt want to bring back many souvenirs: wood or metal sculptures, jewelry, paintings, clothing and various objects, as well as a few consumables (soap, honey, coffee, oils, etc.), you'll be spoilt for choice. Be prepared to bargain!
