Detail of the stay : Authentic Ethiopia: Adventure, Culture and Nature - 3 days

  • Volcan Erta Alé
  • Dallol Depression
  • Semara

Day 1: Addis-Semera-Ahmed Ila

Steps: Volcan Erta Alé, Dépression De Dallol

Welcomed by your guide at Semera airport on arrival, we drive to Ahmed Ila, the last small village before Dallol. From here, it's about 20 km to our destination, one of the wonders of the world. Overnight in traditional open-air beds.

  • altitude 80 below sea level.
  • picnic lunch prepared by our cook.
  • dinner at Ahmed ila by our cook.

Day 2: Ahmed Ila-Dallol-Erta Ale

Early morning visit to Dallol, crossing Lake As Ale. At 136 meters below sea level, it's the second lowest point in Africa after Lake Asal in Djibouti. Admire the breathtaking landscape, a concretion of many shades of red, yellow and orange from the hot water, sulfuric acids and minerals gushing up from the ground. Afternoon drive to Erta Ale. At sunset, you'll begin the 20-minute hike to the crater rim of Erta Ale volcano. The Erta Ale volcano is recorded as one of the few lava lakes on our planet. Once you've reached the summit, you'll descend into the caldera and make your way to the crater rim to become one of the few people to have seen the Erta Ale volcano with their own eyes.

Spend the night on a mattress admiring the stars over Erta Ale's basaltic lava field (at the Erta Ale parking lot)

Altitude Erta Ale 613 metres above sea level.

Breakfast at Ahmed Ila by our cook.
picnic lunch prepared by our cook.
dinner prepared by our cook.

Day 3: Erta Ale-Afdera-Semera

Steps: Semara

Stop at Afdera on the way back, a wonderfully bright green lake surrounded by black basalt mountains behind. Here you can see modern salt extraction, which contributes the lion's share of our country's consumption. There's a hot spring nearby where you can take a bath and float on the lake, like the Dead Sea.
