350 km from Awash (8 hrs by road) and 200 km from Kombolcha (4 hrs by road), the new capital of the Afar region is an uninteresting mushroom town, except that since the closure of the Danakil desert road through Tigray (Mekele), this is where the agencies come to take tourists to see the Erta Alé volcano and the Dallol depression.
