On June 17, 1824, the island of Kassos, which fought for Greek independence by assisting the Cretan revolutionaries, was sacked by the Egyptian fleet, led by the Ottoman army. Every year, this massacre is commemorated: it is one of the largest local celebrations. Traditional songs and dances invade the place and large banquets are prepared: we eat cinnamon pilaf rice and stewed meat for the occasion.
