UNITED COFFEE HOUSE

French cuisine restaurant €€
5/5

Despite the name "Coffee House", it is one of the most refined restaurants in the capital where the wealthy class likes to meet. Opened in 1942, time seems to have no hold on the premises. Still the same woodwork, the same thick carpeting and the impressive crystal chandelier that floats above the room. The menu, deliciously old fashioned, offers dishes drawn from the Raj's repertoire: sole meunière is served alongside tandoori chicken. For those nostalgic for a time that those under 20 can't even imagine.

KARIM’S

French cuisine restaurant €€

When, in 1911, Haji Karimuddin set up his modest gargote in the south of the Jama Masjid, he certainly did not foresee that, a century later, his sign would be one of the most famous in the city. People come here to taste the burra kebab or a basmati badam pasanda, in other words a tender piece of lamb served with an almond-based sauce. You can also taste the kheer, this rice pudding flavoured with cardamom and covered with pistachios and almonds, a delicacy! As the portions are generous, the choice of half (half-serving) is more digestible.

HALDIRAM'S

This chain famous for its cakes and other sweet treats has several restaurants scattered throughout the capital. Sort of a local fast food restaurant, it's the perfect place if you're feeling a little peckish before taking a train. In a large, noisy, neon-lit room, you can quickly swallow a masala dosa, a thali or a dal makhani with rice. Don't miss the rasmalai sold individually to finish on a sweet note. And if Indian specialities don't tempt you, there are a few Western dishes on the menu.

LAZEEZ AFFAIRE

French cuisine restaurant €€

This chic restaurant, frequented mainly by Delhiites, is worth the trip. The Indian food is not only delicious, but also spicy (for once!). And that's not all, the staff is very friendly and the portions are copious. Our suggestion: boneless murg tikka or murg makhani (chicken) with cheese nan and navratan pulao. You will tell us about it... This is also one of the few interesting options in the Chanyakapuri area, where if all the embassies gather, there are not many restaurants.

SAM'S CAFE

French cuisine restaurant

Sam's Cafe is another mythical place of Pahar Ganj. If the dining room does not have any interest, everyone can take refuge on the roof and its terrace as a garden. With a fine selection of Italian, Israeli, Chinese and cooked meats in the tandoor, the chef knows how to attract tourist customers who are in the neighbourhood. Unfortunately, the result is not up to the map, and we've stayed on our hunger a little. Prefer to enjoy a fresh drink at the end of the day.

KARIM'S

French cuisine restaurant €€

More elegant than Old Delhi's, the waiters' uniforms match the burgundy of the two rooms. Here, we recommend the chicken afghani, whose spicy note you will calm down with a cucumber raita or the spicy mutton with its subtle perfume. Finally, the kulfi refreshes the palate with icy notes of pistachio or almond. Like the one in Old Delhi, this restaurant is a safe bet. It is advisable to make a reservation on Thursday evening because many people, after listening to Sufi songs at the dargah of Nizamuddin, meet here.

GAÏA RESTAURANT AND COFFEE SHOP

French cuisine restaurant €€

In the restaurant's calm, verdant courtyard, you forget you're in the heart of bustling Thamel. But the setting is not the only asset. From breakfast onwards, organic coffee is served, along with homemade cakes and freshly squeezed fruit juices. For lunch and dinner, the menu features classics with no nasty surprises: fine salads, burgers, pasta, Nepalese momos... Here, the clientele is as much Nepalese as Western.

CHEZ CAROLINE

French cuisine restaurant €€

Caroline, who has lived in Nepal for many years, runs this restaurant, which offers a wide selection of bistronomic classics with a modern French twist (salade toulousaine, steak au poivre, mousse au chocolat), as well as upscale seasonal specialties. The place has become a meeting place for Westerners living in Kathmandu. And it's a favorite with visiting travelers. The setting is remarkable, in the heart of the historic Baber Mahal Revisited palace, and the dishes are refined. A tasty moment.

FRENCH CREPERIE

French cuisine restaurant

It's easy to spot with its green bicycle supporting flowerpots and its pretty garden where the tables are laid out. Definitely the place to enjoy a good crêpe, just like in Brittany! Hari knows France well, having visited several times, and has developed a passion for crêpes. The plates are hearty, prepared à la minute with fresh produce. Special mention for the buckwheat galettes, but also for other French dishes: ratatouille and croque-monsieur (with homemade béchamel).
