The most beautiful natural sites to discover Iles grecques

Karavi's page is beyond that of Livadakia and the village of Ramos. It is easily accessible on foot from the village. This sandy beach offers no shadow and does not have tavern. It is often frequented by naturists. Water is particularly clear.

This is the longest sand beach in the bay of Livadi. A few taverns and coffees cross the seafront at that level. It is a well-equipped and family-run beach. The water is shallow.

Platanas beach is 7 km from the city and 10 minutes from the port. Nearby Stomio is a clear water river where you can also swim.

The beach is close to the city centre, taverns and other shops. Eretria is a popular destination with the Greeks who often spend their summer holidays. Despite this, the beach is never overcrowded. The palm trees add to the slightly changing atmosphere of this urban beach.

The hotel is located near the port. Sandy beaches in Neorion, where you will also find rooms to rent and two reasonably cheap hotels: the most beautiful beach is Kanali.

From the village of Lipsi, you can reach this part of the island on foot in about 30 minutes. Before arriving, you will see on your right the 16th century church of Panaghia Harou, famous for the icon of the Virgin celebrated on August 23rd (see box). A little further away, you can taste and buy organic products from Kostas Makris, who has taken over the family farm a few years ago, and further away, Kohlakura is a pleasant pebble beach. Shaded in the morning, it offers little shade during the day but the waters are crystal clear.

The bus that leads to Karfas also serves Megas Nissi, a pretty nice beach. But you have to have your own means of transportation to continue to Aghia Fotini, a translucent water cove, with some taverns.

The site was once the resort of the country's notables, hence the many «dungeons» located near small gulfs. It is in this spa that many young people come to taste the virtues of salt water and hut. On the green hill of the Kariès, you can visit one of the most famous monasteries of Greece, the monastery of Saint Raphael.

Tsamakia, close to the city, is a beach managed by the tourist office. Several sandy beaches follow on the airport road: Kourtzis, Naftikos Omilos, Vigla, Kratigos.

6 km from Kontopouli, near the village of Kalliopi, one of the best beaches of Lemnos, ideal for camping. Sandy beach and crystal clear waters.

8 km southeast of Samos is the small bay of Kerveli. The suspension road that leads there is superb. In the summer you can rent pedal boats. If you are a good swimmer, you can reach the Désert desert island after market 1,5 km north from Kerveli.

2 km from Kokkari in the direction of Karlovassi, down the road is the rather popular small beach of Lemonakia, but easy to miss, so be careful! At 3 km from Kokkari, still in the direction of Karlovassi, the small beach of Tsamadou is narrow and tree-lined. The water there is shallow, so it is an ideal place for children. And at 5 km from Kokkari, still in the direction of Karlovassi, the beach of Tsambou is a pleasant pebble beach of 250 meters, located between two cliffs, really beautiful. Easy access from the road.

To discover the beauty of the island, travel up the Fonias River, called "the killer" for its tumultuous flows during the winter. It flows through landscapes of unwavering majesty and creates some of the largest natural pools and waterfalls on the island. As you descend into lush vegetation teeming with sycamores, maples and beech trees, the trail becomes more challenging - bring closed-toe shoes. The highest waterfall falls 35 m, with an impressive crash. A dreamlike scenery without equal in the Greek islands.

Many natural pools have formed around Therma, created by the rivers and streams that cascade from Mount Fengari towards the sea. With this, freshwater swimmers will be spoilt for choice. Close to the village, reach the cold waters of Paradisos. Further on, you can walk to the waters of Gria Vathra, or try the trail that climbs from the coast to the natural pools of Grigorakis, next to an ancient monastery, Moni Christou. The view from this touching building, now closed, is splendid.

Unique geological site, the petrified forest of Lesvos is divided into several sites: the park of Sigri is located at 6 km from the village, and depends on the museum of natural history which manages the place in summer. Sometimes the site closes due to lack of staff, so ask beforehand to avoid finding the door closed. This large area of scrubland was covered with lava following a volcanic eruption that took place 20 million years ago. Some original petrified trunks are still visible.

Mylos is considered to be the most beautiful beach on the island. It is a real little jewel hidden south of the village of Agios Nikitas. Until a few years ago, it was not easy to access, which was perfect for those who like to get away from the crowd. Although its accessibility has improved, it is still a beautiful preserved place with soft, shiny sand. Nowadays, Mylos is still accessible by boat with shuttles from Aghios Nikitas, or by taking one of the two paths from the village. Allow 20 minutes of walking.

The best beaches around Argostoli are Makris Gialos and Platis Gialos, which has an excellent hotel. Further afield you will not be disappointed by the beaches of Avithos and Lourdas. On the road to Fiskardo, Myrtos is THE postcard beach with turquoise water against a background of white sand. You will see this beautiful white crescent as you come from the road. Be careful, the sea is very deep and the currents are dangerous. At 16 km from Argostoli, in Lourdata, long beach with a nice hotel lined with lemon and orange trees.

Chrisi Milia beach is located 4 km north-east of the capital. Water sports can also be used there. Chrisi Milia, in turquoise waters, owes its name to its golden sand (chrisii means "walleye" in Greek). It is bordered by a pine forest, and their shadow is welcome in summer.

To the north of Kavos you will find the beautiful beach of Kokkinokastro ("red castle"). The impressive cliffs offer the beach a postcard decor. An island called Kokkinonisi ("Red Island") or Vrahos ("Rocher") is located right opposite the beach.
