The Vilaine was one of the first rivers to be canalized in France under the reign of FrançoisI in the 16th century. The river trade developed there, in particular with the transport of salt. Guipry was one of the stages of the salt road of Brittany because of its situation between Rennes and Redon. The salt from the marshes of Guérande and Ré used to transit via Redon and Guipry to reach Rennes. From this time, the quays, beautiful houses of the 17th century as well as the names of streets like the street of the Gabelous (salt gendarmes) and that of the Sauniers (salt merchants) remain.
