A rocky spur transformed into a memorial museum of the battlefield and fighting on the Alsace plain at Wattwiller.

The HWK is a rocky spur overlooking the Alsace plain. This strategic position was a key battleground in the First World War, with almost 30,000 casualties. Today, a place of remembrance, the battlefield is an open-air museum. The national monument was erected in memory of the fighting: the Altar of the Fatherland dominates the necropolis, and the crypt is a place of meditation. The Franco-German historial is a permanent page in the history of the war.

Ballade dans les tranchés(très bien conservées) exceptionnelle, je conseille ce lieu aux touristes comme aux alsaciens qui n'y seraient pas encore allés.

As an American descended from French-Canadians who followed the long Connecticut River to the state that now bears the same name, I have always wished to visit the land of my forebears. I am also a student of military history, but was unaware of this WWI memorial to the tragedy played out here in blood, iron, and lead. When a niece's marriage in Switzerland led me to Europe, I searched for the closest place that also wedded these two interests.
This is truly a sobering, tragic place. The museum's exhibits are of top-notch quality, the cemetery has great honor for the dead, and the crypt is truly impressive for the ages. My wife and I walked the trails, on both the French side and the German. It brought hope for the future to find that the French had extended an invitation to Germany to place its own memorial on the site, in the good interests of healing long-festering and simmering hatreds and deep wounds.
Alexander, who worked the front desk on the day we visited, is of the highest caliber. He was the first French person we were to interact with during our short stay near Mulhouse. We could not have asked for a more helpful, welcoming presence than he.
Whomever works at the museum, please direct him to this review. I wish to thank him publicly for such a personal, knowledgeable, and remarkably welcoming manner.
