In June 2022, this museum dedicated to Brittany's most popular painter moved into one of the stud's stables. A new, modern and well-designed setting, to better showcase the diversity and quality of the work of this local artist. Born in 1882 to a Lamballais craftsman and innkeeper, this prolific and inquisitive artist was a painter, engraver, draughtsman and decorator all rolled into one. His work is marked by a documentary aspect, with a talent for capturing the moment and a sensitivity to detail. Mathurin Méheut first made a name for himself with his work on marine flora and fauna, during a seminal stay at the Station de biologie marine in Roscoff, between 1910 and 1912. He also turned his attention to Japan, and sketched the daily lives of soldiers at the front during the Great War. Mobilized for over four years, he sent his wife nearly a thousand illustrated letters. A quasi-ethnographic approach that he also applied to Brittany: he depicted the work of fishermen and craftsmen, collective events such as pardons... A precious and accurate testimony to the region, then straddling tradition and modernization. Méheut also collaborated with Quimper's Henriot faïenceries, decorated liners and illustrated books... The semi-permanent tour ends with the discovery of the masterly tapestry La Mer, a 6 m by 4 m piece. The thematic exhibition is renewed each year. A moving and instructive visit, highly recommended.
