In the heart of the Côtes-d'Armor region, Dinan is one of Brittany's most beautiful medieval towns. Listed as a Ville d'Art et d'Histoire (Town of Art and History), Dinan's exceptional heritage, cobbled streets, timber-framed houses and timeless atmosphere will enchant you. Founded in the 11th century, Dinan really took off in the 18th century thanks to the weavers whose sails were shipped to Saint-Malo. Today, the town invites you to stroll between heritage and nature, from the famous Rue du Jerzual linking the upper town to the port, to the peaceful banks of the River Rance. So, what's there to see and do in Dinan? Here are the 13 must-sees to make the most of your visit.
1. Dinan's Saint-Malo church, a true emblem of flamboyant Gothic architecture

Built in the 15th century, Dinan's Saint-Malo church is as impressive for its architecture as for its rich heritage. Inside, you can admire a magnificent organ with polychrome pipes, built by Oldknow in 1889 and listed as a historic monument. Its treasure trove of religious silverware rivals that of the greatest cathedrals. The church is also renowned for its early 20th-century stained glass windows, depicting both religious scenes and episodes from the daily lives of the people of Dinan. Its bell tower houses four bells, the largest of which, affectionately nicknamed "Gros-Malo", still sets the pace for life in the town. We recommend a stop in the charming English garden beside the church, perfect for a peaceful break.
2. Dinan castle, one of the jewels in the medieval wall surrounding the town.

Built between 1380 and 1390 by Duke Jean IV of Brittany, the Château de Dinan will plunge you into the heart of the region's military and seigniorial history. Today, they extend over 2.65 kilometers and include an impressive series of curtain walls, a keep, 14 defensive towers and several monumental gates. Listed as a historic monument, the ramparts offer superb views over the town and the Rance valley, notably from the Promenade de la Duchesse Anne, accessible from the Jardin Anglais or 18 rue du Général de Gaulle. Another not-to-be-missed section isthe chemin de ronde, between 20 rue de l'École and 9 rue Michel, overlooking the picturesque rue du Jerzual.
Historical highlight: after his defeat at Saint-Aubin-du-Cormier, Duke François II could have used these fortifications against the troops of the King of France. As a humanist, he preferred to open up the town, marking a turning point in its destiny.

Built at the end of the 15th century by the wealthy local bourgeoisie, the Tour de l'Horloge rises 47 meters above the medieval town. It offers one of the finest panoramic views of Dinan and the Rance valley, making it one of the most beautiful places to visit on Brittany's Emerald Coast. In 1501, Duchess Anne de Bretagne granted the people of Dinan the privilege of installing a communal clock here. The mechanism, manufactured in Nantes, can still be seen today and is one of the oldest in Europe.
