TAIZÉ INTERNATIONAL ECUMENICAL COMMUNITY
Taizé has been a welcoming, international ecumenical community since 1940.
An ecumenical community founded by Brother Roger, who came from Switzerland in 1940 at the age of 25. Having acquired an abandoned house where he took in war fugitives, particularly Jews, he was denounced in 1942 and had to flee until his return in 1944, accompanied by a few Brothers. Today, there are more than a hundred of them, Catholics and non-Catholics alike, living solely from their work. In small fraternities, some are established in various underprivileged countries. Taizé is visited by many eminent members of various Churches, such as the Orthodox Patriarch Bartholomew in 2017. In 1966, the Sisters of Saint Andrew settled in the neighboring village to help welcome the growing number of young people from every continent. They were joined by Polish Ursulines. Taizé favors international gatherings of young people aged 17 to 30: contributions include accommodation and meals, the amount varying according to the country of origin and possibilities. Taizé also welcomes adults for individual retreats in communion with the community, as well as families with children.
