Premaydena is a small village located 19 km northwest of Port Arthur, on the shores of Impression Bay, in Norfolk Bay. This village, now occupied by a few houses, is the site of what was the second largest convict settlement of the colonial era on the Tasman Peninsula (after Port Arthur), the Saltwater Colliery. Located in a fertile valley, the station was opened from 1833 to 1857 as a base for logging until the local timber was exhausted. After serving as a quarantine facility for 300 passengers from a migrant ship stricken with typhoid fever, the site was sold.
