Broke is a small Hunter village located between Singleton and Cessnok and known for its many vineyards in the area. The village was founded around 1860 and is crossed by one of the branches of the Great North Road, a 260 km road built by convicts between 1826 and 1831. This road connects Parramatta to the Hunter Valley and is one of the 11 Australian prison sites. The southern part of Broke offers superb views over the vineyards to the Broken Back Range, whose most notable feature is the sandstone formation called Yellow Rock. Baiame Cave with its Aboriginal paintings is about 12 km to the west.
