Still largely undeveloped in terms of tourism, Delčevo nonetheless enjoys beautiful landscapes with mountains all around. The town took its current name in 1950, in honor of the Macedonian Bulgarian revolutionary Goce Delčev (1872-1903). It was previously called Carevo Selo/Царево Село: the "emperor's village" in memory of its Byzantine past. For all that, the churches here are modern, like the small monastery of Delčevo dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God and founded in 1999, just outside the town, at the foot of Mount Golak. After all, the entire region was populated mainly by Turks. The vast majority left after the First Balkan War, in 1913, and during the transfers organized by Yugoslavia to Turkey, in 1953. Mosques have been destroyed or remain in a state of ruin, as in the village of Zvegor/Ѕвегор (3.5 km southeast of Delčevo), where only an isolated minaret remains. Visiting sites are therefore rare. But there is no shortage of hiking routes.
