Vrh Vitoroga
Highest peak in the Šipovo region, at 1,906 m. At the summit, a former bunker and grandiose views as far as Croatia.
At an altitude of 1,906 m, this "wind-twisted peak" (Vrh Vitoroga/Врх Виторога) dominates the entire region, offering grandiose views as far as the Vranica (Central Bosnia), Troglav (Herzegovina) and Dinara (Croatia) mountains. Located 35 km south of Šipovo, Mount Vitorog is shared by the Bosnian Serb Republic to the north and the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the south, on the boundary between the municipalities of Šipovo and Glamoč. Called Veliki Vitorog ("Great Vitorog"), it is linked by a cordillera to Mali Vitorog ("Little Vitorog"), a peak 2.5 km to the southeast that reaches 1,747 m in altitude. Both are rather arid, but are home to a wealth of flora and fauna, including wolves and bears. To reach Grand Vitorog, follow the R415 road to the Janj islets, then turn right. A small road passes through the hamlet of Popuže/Попуже, then a field of dolines (circular karst depressions), before climbing through pine trees. A carriage road then provides access to the summit by 4 × 4, mountain bike or on foot (4h walk). The "Vitorog" mountain club in Šipovo can organize hikes here and in the surrounding area. At the top, surprise: a huge underground bunker is freely accessible. This is a former Yugoslav army communications relay built around 1975. In case of bad weather, this disused base serves as a refuge. On the eastern slopes of Mount Vitorog, along the R415 road, lies the Vagan cave.
