FORTERESSE DE SOKOGRAD
In ruins and difficult to access, this fortress saw the victory of the first king of Bosnia over the king of Hungary in 1363.
This former 13th-century fortified town (Tvrđava Sokograd/Тврђава Сокоград) dominates the industrial zone of Sokolac/Соколац (7 km west of Šipovo). All that remains are ruins drowned in vegetation, at an altitude of 620 m, and access is via a poorly-marked path. But it was here, in July 1363, that Stefan Tvrtko I routed the army of King Louis I of Anjou of Hungary and was crowned King of Bosnia. In 2025, the Šipovo tourist board announced its intention to improve the facilities of the fortress and the nearby Sokolac cave.
