FORTERESSE HADŽI-BEY
Ruined Ottoman fortress of ancient origin. It was a stronghold for the French in Dubrovnik between 1806 and 1808.
This ruined fortress (Hadži-Bey) lies at the foot of the Žaba hill (716 m above sea level), 2.2 km south of Hutovo. Of ancient origin, it was reinforced by the Ottomans in the 17th century to counter the Venetians. Shaped like a pentagon (approx. 70 x 50 m), it had nine towers, one of which is circular and still stands 12 m high. The fortress owes its name to the last officer in charge, Hadži Mehmed-bey Rizvanbegović (1768-1832), captain of Stolac, who allied himself with the French in Dubrovnik between 1806 and 1808.
