MOUNT TOMORR NATIONAL PARK
This protected area (261 ) hosts a major Bektashi pilgrimage on August 20 and 25 to Mount Tomorr (2,382 m altitude).
This 261 km2 protected area (Parku Kombëtar Mali i Tomorrit) is an important pilgrimage site. Created in 1956, the park covers the Tomorr range, which stretches between the Osum (west) and Tomorrica (east) rivers. At an altitude of 2,382 m, Mount Tomorr can be reached by carriage road (28 km northeast of Poliçan via Bargullas). But the highest point is further north, at Partisan Peak (Çuka e Partizanit, 2,416 m). The park includes forests (beech, Bosnian pine, Byzantine hazel...) and trails that are often poorly marked. The Bogova waterfall (Ujvara e Bogovës) can be reached on foot from the village of Bogova (11 km south-east of Poliçan). A tributary of the Osum, the Bogova ("divine" in Slavonic) makes a series of jumps over a height of 20 m, before falling into blue waters. But it's Mount Tomorr that fascinates. According to ancient tradition, Baba Tomor resides here, a protective figure accompanied by four eagles. The mountain has become the site of two pilgrimages. Since 1929, the Bektashis have made the ascent on August 20 and 25. According to them, the ashes of Abbas ibn Ali (son of the first Shiite Imam) were brought here after his death at the battle of Kerbala (Iraq) in 680. Some 200,000 worshippers flock to the Baba-Abaz-Ali tekké, at an altitude of 1,500 m, before reaching the mausoleum at the summit. Orthodox Albanians come on August 15 for the Feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God.
