Poliçan/Poliçani (pronounced "polichan"/"polichani") has a population of around 4,000. It is the capital of the municipality of Poliçan (11,000 inhabitants). The village lies 25 km southeast of Berat (minibus connections). This former industrial town overlooks the Osum valley at 519 m altitude. It was founded in 1961 to produce arms and munitions. As Hoxha's Albania was then linked to Mao's China, it received its strange name, composed of the words polis ("city" in Greek) and shān ("hill" in Mandarin). Now in decline, it is the main access point for Tomorr National Park.
