In addition to a visit to the monastery, the site of the "Portuguese Bridge", which overlooks a small gorge close to the main road, is a very peaceful place where it's not uncommon to come across gelada baboons. Two excursions can be undertaken on either side of this route. The Jemma River valley, recommended for keen birdwatchers. The Muger River Gorge is also rich in animal life, but much more accessible. To get there, take the main road from Chancho to the village of Durba. Chancho is 60 km south of Debre Damo, a monastery 40 km from Addis Ababa.
