The city almost supplanted Addis Ababa as the country's capital. Founded in 1900 by Menelik II, who wanted to make it the epicenter of his kingdom, Addis Alem (meaning the new world) was not to be. He changed his mind three years later and kept Addis Ababa as his capital, while some 20,000 Oromo were already erecting buildings. All that remains of this short epic is the Debré Sion Mariam church. This uninteresting town is often just passing through.
