The city almost supplants Addis Ababa as the country's capital. Founded in 1900 by Menelik II who wanted to make it the epicenter of his kingdom, Addis Alem (which means the new world) was not. He changed his mind three years later to keep Addis Ababa as his capital, when nearly 20,000 Oromos were already building. Of this short epic, only the church Debré Sion Mariam remains, overhanging on the left side of the road. We often just pass through this uninteresting town on our way to Bahar Dar.
