Situated at an altitude of 700 m, the little town is a veritable tribal melting pot. The highland populations who have descended here are mingled with a host of refugees from Sudan and South Sudan. The different ethnic groups are identified by their scarifications: the Nuer have their foreheads indented with five or six horizontal lines, the Chelouk have multiple dotted blisters and the Dinka have V-shaped scarifications. Finally, it's not uncommon to come across a few Surma in town, who have come to stock up on various products, as well as araki, the extremely strong alcohol (50 to 70 degrees) imported from the highlands.
