So spoke Louis XIV of the Place Forte de Neuf-Brisach, a masterpiece of military architecture listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. In the 18thcentury , Vauban set out to protect the Rhine crossing, creating a perfect octagon with eight bastions, inside which the streets intersect at right angles and are laid out in a checkerboard pattern.
