At 1h40 by train from Kyōto, the town of Maizuru developed, until the end of the Second World War, as a port of the Japanese navy. It is still today an important base for the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force. The ports of Nishi-Maizuru and Higashi-Maizuru play a crucial role for maritime transport. This stopover town, facing the Sea of Japan, is also a good stopping point on a journey to Fukui. The seafood is very famous here, especially the "Maizuru crabs", which have their own name. They are appreciated as a true luxury product.
