There is very little reliable information about this old stone fireplace built where the Powhatan village of Werowocomoco was located. In one of his books, John Smith wrote that in 1609, he had an English-style stone house built for Chief Powhatan. In all likelihood, this chimney would have belonged to him. Destroyed in 1888 in a violent storm, it was rebuilt shortly afterwards in the same way.
