Gloucester County does not have a great tourist interest, but it is worth mentioning because this is where the most important village of the Powhatans tribe, including Pocahontas, was located. When they arrived in the area, the English described Werowocomoco and its location on the banks of the York River. This is where John Smith was taken after his capture and (according to him) rescued by Pocahontas. In 1609, Chief Powhatan decided to move the tribal capital inland for greater security. Since the 1970s, archaeologists have found thousands of objects attesting to the presence of Powhatans in this area. The site has been protected since 2016, although there are few traces of Werowocomoco left today, except Powhatan's Chimney.
