Close to the Chinese border, the Dông Van limestone plateau in Hà Giang province stretches across the 4 districts of Quan Ba, Yên Minh, Dông Van and Mèo Vac, at an altitude of between 1,400 and 1,600 m. The "stone plateau" offers a grandiose, austere landscape where the Tay and Hmông ethnic minorities toil to grow corn on steep slopes bristling with rocky peaks. The route takes in the former "palace" of the Hmông king (Nha vua meo) and offers sublime views of karst landscapes that seem to emerge from legend.
