Far from the Wild West, Chami is nevertheless reminiscent of those towns in the American West lined up along the railroad tracks by gold diggers. Here, there are no railroads but gold miners. The town has grown from 2,600 inhabitants when it was built in 2013 to more than 10,000 today, workers from all parts of the country but also from Mali, Sudan and Morocco, feverishly following rumors of the discovery of nuggets in the vicinity. Tormented by the winds, Chami stretches its stores on both sides of the tar road that connects Nouakchott to Nouadhibou. Halfway between these two cities, it is a stop for those who want to eat or fill up their gas tank.
