Achenkovil is a river along which many temples are found. It is also the name of the forest surrounding the banks of the river. A major Hindu pilgrimage center, the Achenkovil Sastha Temple is one of the five Sastha temples of Kerala, presided over by Lord Ayyappa. This god of growth is Shiva and Mohini's son, a female avatar of Vishnou. The waterfalls of Kumbhavurutty (in Aravappulam near NH 208) are a popular attraction in the region.
