Punalur is a small municipality in the Kollam district, with a population of around 67,000. It lies 45 km east of Kollam and 75 km north of Thiruvananthapuram. It is a gateway to the Thenmala dam and its eco-tourism park, on the border with Tamil Nadu. The town boasts a number of curiosities, not least the suspension bridge built in 1877 by the British over the Kallada River. Built to link the population to the dense forests on the other side of the river, its interest is now purely historical. Also worth seeing: the Ootakkal viewpoint, the gateway to the region.
