Wilson is a small town located an hour and twenty minutes east of Durham. While agriculture and, particularly tobacco fields, have enabled the city to become, for a time, a dynamic and economically strong centre, today Wilson seems to be in the midst of a transition from a difficult few decades ago to a hopeful future. The inhabitants hope to soon enjoy the influence of its neighbour, Durham, attracting major national companies. In the meantime, efforts are being made to rehabilitate the downtown area, which still seems very sad, despite beautiful buildings and some new breweries and hipster addresses. Wilson, whose white and black populations are almost equal, is a perfect example of American racial segmentation. The railway line separates the white city center from the African-American neighborhoods. The difference is noticeable as soon as you cross the railway, you leave the wide, deserted and clean avenues of the centre to go into poorer and more lively neighbourhoods where the locals gather, around a BBQ, in a shop or simply to chat in the street. If you're heading to the coast from Durham, Wilson may be able to stop for lunch or stretch his legs. From April to July, don't miss the superb artistic event at Eyes On Main Street.
