Much more charming than Atlantic City, but not as picturesque as Cape May, Ocean City is a popular seaside resort on sunny days. Proof of this is the fact that its population of 11,000 inhabitants is multiplied by ten every summer. John Peck, a whaler from the early 18th century, was the first to store freshly caught whales here; it was in his honour that the city was known as Peck's Beach for over a century and a half. In 1879, Methodists founded a Christian camp and decided to rename it Ocean City. You should also know that you will not be able to buy a single drop of alcohol in the city: because of its religious origins, Ocean City has remained a dry town and the sale of alcohol is strictly prohibited.Although it does not have the Victorian charm of Cape May, Ocean City is a pleasant city where you can enjoy the sea air, swimming and surfing. With its many rides and children's festivities, it is the favourite destination for families on the Jersey Shore.
