This village is surprisingly vibrant given its population of just over 1,200 people. Founded in 1680, Onancock was, at the end of the War of Independence, the site of the Battle of Kedges Strait, which took place in the waters of the bay and pitted Royal Navy ships against the naval forces of the Maryland Colony.Onancock is also where you can take the ferry to Tangier Island, a tiny island destined to disappear in the bay within half a century - more than 65% of its surface area has already been swallowed up by water since 1850! About 700 people live on the island, whose economy is mainly based on fishing. Go before it's too late....
