An hour and a half from Washington D.C. by car, Solomons Island is a refuge for anyone looking for peace and quiet. Despite its name, it is not an island but a village of 1,500 inhabitants, nestled at the southern end of the Calvert peninsula. Long isolated, it has become much busier since the construction of the Governor Thomas Johnson Bridge over the Patuxent River. The bridge connects the village to the larger and more easily accessible neighbouring peninsula of St Mary's. Solomons Island is now a popular seaside destination, especially for the people of D.C. and Baltimore.
