Wemindji came into being when the village was relocated from an island in Old Factory Bay. Its name comes from the Cree and means "painted hills" or "ochre mountains". The Wemindji territory is divided into two parts: Cree reserve land and the territory of the Cree village municipality of the same name. To immerse yourself in local culture and traditions, a variety of guided tours are offered, from visits to the Cree community to canoe and kayak excursions. To extend your stay, the Maquatua Inn offers 30 rooms and a restaurant service.
