You're just down the road. Located on the south shore of the La Grande River, the municipality of Chisasibi ("big river" in the Cree language) is home to approximately 5,000 Cree people. Here the boreal forest meets the tundra, James Bay meets Hudson Bay. If the place seems rather modern, it's because the inhabitants were relocated here between 1978 and 1980, from Fort George Island located 10 km to the west at the mouth of the La Grande River. Every summer, the Mamoweedow cultural festival is held for a week on this island, where you can attend the Chisasibi Cree Nation's pow wow.
