Hlybokaïe preserves what is most intrinsic in Belarusian culture and way of life. Due to its geographical location, the city was an important shopping centre between the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Russian Empire. Attached to the latter in 1793, she was occupied by the Germans between 1918 and 1920. She became Polish in 1921 following the signing of the Riga agreement. During World War II, she experienced her most atrocious period: more than 5000 Jews were exterminated by the Nazis. Despite this sad page of history, the city now has something to impress visitors. The authenticity of its inhabitants so gently called maltsy («small brothers»), the buildings dating back to 1700, the Orthodox cathedrals and the monument to the Baron of Münchhausen make the Charm of this Small Town halfway between Minsk and Vitebsk. Finally, here you will taste the best cherries in the country and the famous shuschenka (sweet concentrated milk), two specialties to eat without moderation!Hlybokaïe is 80 km from Polotsk, 130 km from Minsk and 160 km from Vitebsk. Several buses per day from Minsk and Vitebsk (approximately 3 hours drive).
