About 75 km south of Salt Lake City, at the foot of Provo Peak, is the town of the same name. It was founded in 1849 by Mormons and named in memory of Etienne Provost, a trapper who explored the area in 1825. The man behind Salt Lake City, Brigham Young, established a university there in 1875: Brigham Young University. Today it has an enrollment of over 33,000 and houses several museums - art, archaeology, ethnology, geology, and zoology - as well as a planetarium. It can be a great base for day trips to places like Sundance and Heber Valley.
