In the beginning, Riverton was a Quaker settlement. The construction of a dam and power plant by the Empire District Electric Company in the early 20th century changed all that. The plant produced enough electricity to light 80 communities and mining facilities in the Tri-State. It is the said electric plant that marks the eastern entrance to Riverton. We stop in Riverton for Nelson's Old Riverton Store (formerly Eisler Brothers Old Riverton Store), open since 1925, then leave it west to reach the Brush Arch Bridge (or Rainbow Bridge), on the loop of the old Route 66 from 1920-30 (SE Beasley Road).
