Tripura's capital is located on the Haora River and has a population of over half a million. Around 30% of the state's population is made up of indigenous communities, the largest being the Tripuri, whose language is Kokborok, a Tibeto-Burman dialect. The Tripuri dynasty ruled the Kingdom for 3,000 years before the state merged with the Indian Union in 1949. In 1963, Tripura became a Union Territory, then a state in its own right in 1972. Local tourists flock to visit the Ujjayanta Palace in Agartala, built in 1901 and now the largest museum in the "Seven Sister States".
