UDAYGIRI BUDDHIST COMPLEX
The country's largest Buddhist complex, with numerous votive stupas, representations of Buddha and statues
These remains constitute the largest Buddhist complex uncovered in India. The monastery is thought to have been active between the 7th and 12th centuries. Numerous votive stupas, representations of Buddha and statues have also been found. But the most impressive "monument" is undoubtedly the stepped well carved into the stone. Access to water was essential, especially as this site was home to at least two monasteries and probably hundreds of monks.
