Ratnagiri is the main summit of the Buddhist triangle formed by three major sites: Ratnagiri, Udayagiri and Lalitgiri. Located 93 km north of Bhubaneswar, these sites bear witness to the golden age of Buddhism in the region between the5th and 13th centuries. The religion was then dominant in the region, before Hinduism finally prevailed. Just a few kilometers from Ratnagiri and Mahavihara, at Udaygiri, a second important Buddhist monastery has been discovered in several phases. Although the two sites, Mahavihara and Udaygiri, are geographically close, there is nothing to suggest that they were connected.
