Van Dale is the most famous Dutch lexicographer, the godfather of the dictionary that bears his name
Johan Hendrik van Dale was born in Sluis on February 15, 1828. His parents were originally from Belgium. He married Maria Moens with whom he had 7 children! He became the head teacher of the public school of the city and then the municipal archivist of Sluis. Van Dale is the most famous Dutch lexicographer and the patron of the dictionary that bears his name. This dictionary is THE reference in the Netherlands and is known to all Dutch schoolchildren. The statue dates from 1924.
