This village in Westmorland County, in the Trois-Rivières region, 20 kilometres south of Moncton, is an important historic place for Acadians. Originally inhabited by the Micmac people, Memramcook will welcome the first Acadians in 1700 before they are partially deported in 1755. Despite this dramatic event, the village will survive. This is where the first Francophone university, Collège Saint-Joseph, will open its doors in 1864 and will be organized the First Acadian National Convention 17 years later (1881). Its name of Micmac origin means "Winding River" because of its river of the same name that draws many twists.
