CHURCH OF SANTA MARIA DE PALERA AND SANT SEPULCHRE
A parish church with a single nave and a smooth semicircular apse
A parish church in Palera since 1085, Santa Maria was consecrated as such on the occasion of the consecration of Palera's Holy Sepulchre. It is a small temple with a single nave and a smooth semicircular apse, covered by a barrel vault reinforced by two transverse arches. Until recently, the church housed a polychrome sculpture of the Virgin and Child, now restored and housed in the Girona Art Museum.
A remarkable 11th-century Romanesque building, the Holy Sepulchre has long been an important pilgrimage center. It has three naves lined by three semicircular apses. The interior features barrel and quarter-circle vaults separated by rectangular pillars. The main façade features four double-sill windows and a small porthole crowned by a bell tower.
