MONTSORIU CASTLE
Visit the castle of Montsoriu located at the foot of Montseny and experience an impressive dive into the past of Catalonia
Situated atop a hill over 600 m high, at the foot of Montseny and close to the Guilleries massif, this castle straddles the towns of Arbúcies and Sant Feliu de Buixalleu. It overlooks the Tordera valley and the entire Mediterranean corridor, stretching from Girona to Granollers. It is the most imposing Gothic castle in Catalonia and one of the most important medieval fortifications on the peninsula. This strategic location led to it being the military headquarters of the Viscounts of Cabrera, when this family was one of the most powerful in Catalonia, alongside Peter the Ceremonious (14th century). Throughout its more than 1,000-year history (the earliest references date back to 1002), Montsoriu was occupied by the Iberians, before being used as a strategic defense center for more than 500 years, a point of reference for the Catalan nobility and an impregnable fortress thanks to its impeccable construction. After undergoing numerous transformations throughout its history, until the 14th and 15th centuries, it no longer served its military function and was transformed into a residential palace, with all the refurbishments that this entailed. Since 2021, the castle has been home to an interpretation center for the Viscounty of Cabrera, built around 3 rooms. This is an opportunity to watch a documentary on its historical and heritage legacy in La Selva, and to follow the route of the 13 municipalities in the field.
