JEWISH NEIGHBORHOOD
This neighborhood, one of the most important Jewish neighborhoods in northeastern Catalonia, preserves the irregular urban grid of the Middle Ages
It was one of the most important Jewish neighbourhoods in the north-east, since the city counted up to 300 Jews, enjoying privileges granted by the counts of Empúries. Dating back to the 1492 th century, this community almost disappeared after the decree of expulsion of the Catholic Kings in. The old Jewish quarter comprises a space including the streets of La, Dels Jeues, del Call, del Calabró, Peixateries Marineris and Plaça. This district retains the irregular urban fabric of the middle ages. By visiting it, there are still various testimonies of this past, such as nine funeral stelas preserved in the museum of medieval history of the Curia-Prison, a mezouzah in the town hall, the former convent Saint-Dominique or an ancient street embedded in the current hotel de la Moneda.
