PARK OF THE PREHISTORIC CAVES OF SERINYÀ
Go there and contact

The best Paleolithic site in Western Europe concerning the transition between Neanderthal and modern man.
Established in Serinyà, a town 5 km north of Banyoles, this park is the best Paleolithic site in Western Europe for the transition from Neanterdal man to modern man. It has also been a major archaeological dig site since Dr. Josep Maria Corominas discovered it in 1943. The site contains caves and shelters of travertine (the local stone) dating back thousands of years, which researchers believe to have been home to different human populations -Homo heidelbergensis,Homo neanderthalensis andHomo sapiens - over a period ranging from the Middle Paleolithic (200,000 BC) to the Metal Age (3,100 years ago). Recent studies have shown that the skull found in one of the caves, known as Mollet III, is the oldest human remains of modern man(Homo Sapiens) in Catalonia. After watching a video recounting the region's prehistory, the tour begins by walking along a short path, where you can enter some of these excavations, carved out by nature and time. All in all, the tour guarantees an astonishing experience in the footsteps of our ancestors. To complete the tour, we recommend a visit to the Banyoles archaeological museum (located on the premises of the Pia Almoina), where many of the objects and bones discovered in these caves are on display.
