MAJOR REC
The Rec Major is the main channel coming from the lake of Banyoles.
This is the main canal from Lake Banyoles. In fact, the city is criss-crossed by the lake's outflow canals, and their many forks. A section of therec major winds under the Plaça Major, and although most of the canals were covered over in the 20thcentury , parts of the water route have been reopened and promoted as part of the city's heritage. In the square, the rec major flows from the Abeuradors passageway (where it is uncovered), through rue du Born (underground), before re-emerging in rue de Girona, continuing its course towards the south of the city.
You can observe it by entering one of the buildings in the square, such as Cal Moliner (tourist office), l'Ateneu or one of the bars: some of the canal's branches pass through the houses from the inside.
