The town of Barisal has 330 000 inhabitants and stretches on the right bank of the river Kirtankhola. A port of importance, it has few tourist attractions but is a good reflection of the typical of Bangladeshi medium cities deriving their economic dynamism from their river environment. The resistance of Hindus under the Mughal era retained independence in Barisal until it folds under the control of the nawabs of Bengal. It obtained its status as a municipality in 1876 under the British Raj and remained from an important centre in the region. With many schools and a university, Barisal proudly displays a literacy rate of 75%, much higher than the national average.
